A ground investigation was carried out to provide information for the design of the road and car park pavements. Geo-technical testing gave fairly low CBR values in the underlying natural firm clays. The contruction works required stripping back the superficial strata to expose the natural firm clay formation. A terrain 1000 geogrid was incorporated beneath the construction with a capping layer of 450mm beneath roads and 250 – 300mm beneath car park areas.
The heavy clay soils across the site precluded the use of soakaways for the disposal of surface water. Paved areas are therefore drained by the use of ACO channels exploiting the natural slope of the site. Attenuated discharge from the site drains to the public sewer system.
