Work: structural engineering

The historic ‘Staircase House’ was severely damaged by fire. The ambitious redevelopment scheme required the use of significant lateral propping and support during partial demolition, modification and rebuilding.

The new spaces created are complex in layout spread over a number of different levels and mezzanines. The unusual layout provides a procession through the museum and recreates the feel of an historic interior.

TRP Consulting were responsible for the development of a structural scheme that could be constructed within the confined site between two existing buildings that had been propped to prevent collapse following the fire damage. The steel frame structure was founded on traditional pads formed in the weathered sandstone. Upper floors were constructed from timber to provide maximum on site flexibility during construction.
